The Phonics Dance
According to Ginny Dowd, creator of The Phonics Dance, students need this program because...
84% of the words in the English language are phonetically correct.
BUT...the 16% that are not phonetically correct appear in all types of literature 80% of the time.
Also...
The more children have to memorize in order to remember the sound or name of a letter or letters, the more they have to process the sound symbol connections. (Stahl, S. (1992) Saying the "P" Word: Nine Guidelines for Exemplary Phonics Instruction. The Reading Teacher Vol. 45. No. 8.)
The brain is a pattern seeking device rather than a rule applier. (Cunningham, P.M. (1995) Phonics They Use: Words for Reading and Writing. New York, NY: Harper Collins College Publishers.)
Children become better decoders when encouraged to invent spell as they write. Invented or temporary spelling is a beginning strategy which encourages children to sound out words (phonics) as they write. (Stahl and Cunningham, 1995)
